Food & Farming for REAL Marquee

Hill farming communities play a vital role in many areas of our lives, literally providing access to everything from food to fresh air. Food and Farming for REAL is organised by farmers and small businesses who believe passionately in the preservation of the uplands and the communities that depend on them.

REAL stands for all the different areas to which hill farming communities contribute: Rural & Regeneration, Education & Environment, Agriculture & Arts, Local & Leisure. Discover why hill farming communities are so important to us all. Watch wool spinning demonstrations and listen to various speakers throughout the day, including Roy Nelson, star of the TV series ‘The Real Emmerdale’, Ben Atkinson, Elaine Hill, Sally Robinson, Wensleydale Creamery, Kilnsey Trekking Centre and Pendle Forest & Craven Hunt. British farmers contribute over £400 million of unpaid work, maintaining the countryside.

In 1964 a farmer sold 7 cows to buy a tractor. In 2006 he had to sell 42.

Hill farming provides breeding stock for lowland sheep flocks, and beef herds, and provides England and Wales with up to a quarter of their milk supply. This also enables grazing of land which is critical to maintain the landscape as the beautiful and natural asset that it is.

There are 500,000 km of hedgerows in England and Wales and farmers are devoting more time to maintain them than ever

50,000 farmers and farm workers are employed on dairy farms in the UK.

Cows do not have teeth on their upper jaw. They wrap their tongues around grass and pull food into their mouths
